Engineering & Design

At PENA, engineering is not simply part of the process, it is the foundation of everything we do.

Every barrel and every screw we manufacture begins with a deep understanding of our customers’ production processes. We analyse every parameter, including material type, machine configuration, production speed, filler content, temperature profile, additives and real operating conditions, to develop a fully customised solution optimised in geometry, metallurgy and processing performance.

We design the entire screw profile, from feed section to metering zone:

  • L/D ratios optimised according to polymer viscosity and residence time requirements.
  • Compression and melting zones engineered to match the rheological behaviour of the material.
  • Maddock, Pineapple, Barrier and custom mixing sections selected according to homogenisation and dispersion requirements.
  • Optimised venting and degassing systems for recycling applications and technical compounds.
  • Flow, pressure and temperature analysis to ensure stable throughput, uniform plasticising and minimal polymer degradation.

Every screw is designed, modelled and validated in-house.Our objective is not simply to produce components, but to improve energy efficiency, reduce cycle times and maximise service life.

We design and manufacture custom barrels with micron-level precision:

  • Precise definition of internal diameter, external diameter, length and alignment according to machine specifications.
  • Selection of the optimum lining technology or bimetallic solution according to abrasion, corrosion, filler content and operating temperature.
  • Integration of customised heating and cooling systems.
  • Controlled internal surface finishes designed to optimise material flow and minimise dead spots.
  • DIN and ISO compliant tolerances, ensuring full compatibility with international OEM standards.

Every process requires a specific balance between wear resistance, hardness and toughness.
At Talleres PENA S.L., we do not simply recommend alloys, we analyse how materials perform under real processing conditions.

Our engineering team evaluates operating parameters including polymer type, filler content, temperature, torque, pressure and moisture levels to define the optimum metallurgical combination for each screw and barrel assembly.

Tailored PENA Material Selection
  • PENA 40 → Engineered for maximum resistance to abrasive wear. Ideal when abrasion is the primary wear mechanism.
  • PENA 51 → The preferred solution for fluoropolymers and highly corrosive compounds. Maximum protection against aggressive chemical attack.
  • PENA 68 → An advanced balance between abrasion resistance and corrosion protection. Recommended for demanding technical applications.
  • PENA 80 → Our highest-performance alloy for extreme processing conditions. Designed to withstand maximum abrasion and corrosion simultaneously.

Before manufacturing begins, we analyse performance requirements and processing conditions to optimise the final solution.
Our engineers carry out thermal and rheological studies to predict polymer behaviour inside the screw and barrel assembly, improving plasticising efficiency, thermal control and process stability.

Based on operational data, we provide predictive recommendations including:

  • Preventive maintenance and inspection programmes.
  • Scheduled refurbishment strategies.
  • Geometrical modifications to stabilise flow behaviour and reduce melt pressure.
  • Process optimisation recommendations to improve productivity, product quality and component service life.
  • Because the best engineering solution is not simply the one that works today, but the one that continues to perform for years to come.
